Available by special order from early July 2024, this is the 'plus size' version of the So-me Marche dye kit - with more thread, more dye shades ready mixed, and more dye fix. Special order means I won't be carrying these as a stock item after the initial stock, but will order them on demand from Japan, so they will take a few weeks to arrive. I have the regular starter kit and other supplies in stock all the time.

Ever wanted to be able to dye your own custom sashiko threads easily, without fuss and mess? Now you can! Olympus have come up with this great dyeing system, which uses a 'dye pen' to literally colour in your sashiko threads. It could not be easier. This excellent starter kit PLUS gives you all you need (apart from some clingfilm, water and a cup!) to dye your own threads in a rainbow of colours.

I've dyed sashiko threads with Procion dye (can be messy), Dylon machine dyes (in the microwave - also a bit messy, and with the potential to stain everything too), and indigo (incredibly messy and complicated). This new dye system is very easy - load up the dye pen, lay out your thread on some clingfilm, and off you go.

Please watch this video I've loaded up onto YouTube to see EXACTLY how it is done! Thanks to Takeshi san and the great team at Olympus for creating a version with English subtitles for me! The video is your free dyeing tutorial, so please refer to it whenever you want.Contents of dye kit - 15 x  10ml dyes, one 50ml dye fix, three dye pens, 15 x 20m 6-ply sashiko thread prepared for dyeing, plus instructions (Japanese for now, but we are working on English instructions - for now, please watch the tutorial). Notebook and pencil not included, but I think you will have those.

These dyes have been chosen so you can mix an infinite number of colours from them and create your own colourways. The dye pens can be reused, and I will be selling dyes separately soon.

Also available -  basic starter kit with 3 dyes; a big box set of all 15 dyes in larger packs plus extra dye fix; extra dye pens; and extra dye fix sachets.

The fourth and fifth photos show what I dyed using the basic starter kit. There was so much dye, after I had dyed the three 20m skeins supplied in the kit, I used three more 20m skein bundles to dye a set of 12 different skeins!

It is recommended that you don't mix up the colours too much that you use in each dye pen, because darker colours will stain the applicator, and could discolour subsequent lighter dyes. So don't use your yellow dye pen for blue, or blue for red etc. For the purest colour, buy extra pens and keep one pen per dye. You can rinse out the applicator nib section in betwen dyes to help keep colours purer.

Dyes are non toxic, but please be sensible and keep them away from pets. Older children would be able to use these dyes with supervision. Please use your common sense!

  • 染 = so-me = dye

染 or そめ, in hiragana - some - has been split into the two syllables, otherwise it would look like the English word 'some'. The word often mutates to zome, as in katazome (stencil dyeing) or aizome (indigo dyeing).

marche = marché (French) = market

Marche is one of those foreign language words that has become popular and is in common usage in Japan in recent years, sometimes used as part of a shop name, and also used for markets, farmers' markets, and pop up events.

You can have fun with this 'dye market'!
