One of a range of contemporary sashiko panels designed by Ayufish Int. aka Sashiko Textile Lab. Explore a different style in your sashiko!
This pre printed sashiko sampler panelfrom Olympus Thread Mfg. Co. is called a 'hana fukin' (which literally means 'flower cloth') in Japanese. It is printed in grey on almond milk (a pinkish beige colour) narrow width traditional sarashi cloth (an easy to stitch traditional Japanese cotton cloth). Each panel is supplied in one piece with a plain area the same size attached, because they are designed to be stitched through both layers and the edges turned in to make a little cloth, but you can stitch the printed layer separately and make them into various other items, such as bags, cushions or quilt panels. They also look great framed.
This design of overlaping blocks reminds me of Mondrian paintings - if he had designed a sashiko sampler, it would probably have looked like this! Of course, you don't have to stitch it only in primary colours, and it would look lovely in many other colour combinations, or perhaps a minimalist black and greys, or a taupe colour scheme. It is such an easy pattern to stitch, going back and forth across each block, you can concentrate on playing with colour.
There are four different sampler designs in this collection - Block, Flow, Pray, and Peaks - and they are available as as panels (white or colours). The panels are also available with threads and a needle as complete kits, but only by special order - please email me. I decided not to stock the complete kits for these as they seem a little expensive.
How much thread do I need? This listing is for the panel only, so you can select your own sashiko threads. You will need two 20m threads or one 80m sashiko thread to complete this panel, so just under 40m of thread in total. These panels are great for using up oddments of threads left over from other sashiko projects, combining various shades that harmonise well, or you can choose from my extensive range of sashiko threads, by type or by colour.
Sarashi cloth is quite lightweight compared with other sashiko fabrics, but is very easy to stitch, super absorbent and wears well. It is one of the fabrics traditionally used for kimono underwear!
