NB - I couldn't get the Clover brand table clamp this time, so the kakehari itself is by Clover, but the table clamp is by Tulip (same item, same quality, but in slightly different packaging).
The Clover 'kakehari' (literally 'cover needle') sewing clamp set comprises the kakehari clamp itself and a small clamp that can attach to the edge of a table. Simply fasten the right hand side of the fabric you are stitching to the clamp, and it functions as a 'third hand' to keep the fabric taut as you sew. Great for stitching running stitch, hemming etc. and of course excellent for the pleating the fabric onto the tip of the needle in sashiko (and boro).
The string on the clamp part (the bit that looks like a close relative of some very ornate scissors) can also be attached to a safety pin and fastened to the leg of your jeans or other clothing, so you don't need to sit next to a table - obviously not delicate clothing!
The kakehari and clamp is essential if you want to sew 'unshin' style, as for kimono tailoring. Billy Matsunaga has a grea video, in English, showing how to do this - click here to watch. You don't have to hold the needle the traditional Japanese way for the kakehari to work though - you can hold it the way you normally would.
A great sewing gadget, and one that, once you have got the hang of using it, you'll wonder how you ever managed without!
