My wholesaler has been digging deep in their warehouse to find this - a 'vintage' print from at least 10 years ago, 'Jazz City' by Art of Possibility looked like the ideal kind of fabric for making my friend Paula Doyle's 'Easy Stack' quilts, so I got a bolt at a great price and sent her some to see how it would look. The results are amazing - see photos 4 - 7.

There's some left if you want to have a go at a similar design too, or just use the fabric as it is. The design features wonderfully scribbly retro paintings of musicians playing various jazz instruments.

Paula's 'Easy Stack' method needs four fabric repeats to work, as shown in her book published by C&T Publishing in 2018 (you can get a copy direct from Paula). This fabric repeats at 60cm intervals along the bolt, and there are two repeats across the width, so 1.5m would give you enough to make one set of blocks, plus a bit extra to use without cutting it up so much. I think it is fun on an 'Easy Stack' quilt to have some of the fabric relatively uncut somewhere in the design (or on the back) as a visual clue to how it originally started out. It's a block cutting technique that works best with big, bold designs.

Another quilt that Paula made from a vintage Japanese yukata cotton I supplied won several awards, including second in the Contemporary category at Festival of Quilts in 2021, using a different block design from 'Easy Stack Quilts' (last photo). Easy Stack is a very easy cutting method which creates stunning quilts, with several different block possibilities. I used it myself to make a wedding quilt on a very quick turnaround, and found the instructions easy to follow - and it made a super fast quilt.
