Sumi means 'ink', specifically the black ink used for Japanese calligraphy, which lends many shades of grey to ink paintings too. Here, small squares with various traditional designs in black and grey on an ivory white background are accented with little touches of gold, reminiscent of the gold decoration on the blocks of ink sold in stationery stores (these are ground into water on an inkstone for use). The squares are approx. just 1in (2.5cm). This print would add a graphic touch to your Japanese patchwork, but also works as a great stand alone print for small projects of all kinds. I want to use a little for a dolls house quilt!
I used a lot of these kinds of prints in my books 'Japanese Quilt Blocks to Mix and Match' and 'Japanese Quilt Inspirations', and they aren't so easy to find at the moment, so I'm always pleased when I spot another design I love.
