This detailed print of koi and frothing water is printed on a textured dobby cloth on black (colours are more accurate in the second photo, and the texture is more visible). This large scale print is perfect for adding that authentic touch to your Japanese themed project.
Abiko is both the name of a city and a Japanese surname, but the kanji characters can also be literally read as 'peaceful grandchild', although this meaning would be less common. But as the image of the koi swimming against the current represents overcoming struggles in life with strength and is an image associated with children's day and especially with boys, maybe that's what the designers were thinking when naming this fabric!
I used a lot of these kinds of prints in my books 'Japanese Quilt Blocks to Mix and Match' and 'Japanese Quilt Inspirations', and they aren't so easy to find at the moment, so I'm always pleased when I spot another design I love.
