Shikaku means 'square', which describes the arrangement of this design very well. Cranes and pine, both representing long life, are arranged on a large go-ban (Go board) grid, which is slightly rectangular. 'Squares' are approx 7in (18cm) across, and are filled in alternately with seigaiha (ocean wave) clamshells and sayagata (saya brocade pattern). Sayagata is printed in gold and the cranes have golden outline accents. Designs like these were once used for men's juban (under kimono), so they would be ideal for a man's quilt or decor. This listing is for the blue colourway. Perfect for adding that authentic touch to your Japanese themed project.

Also available in a brown (second photo). The third photo shows the pattern repeat across the width of the fabric.

I used a lot of these kinds of prints in my books 'Japanese Quilt Blocks to Mix and Match' and 'Japanese Quilt Inspirations', and they aren't so easy to find at the moment, so I'm always pleased when I spot another design I love.
